The Cult: She Sells Sanctuary

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

This video has everything: weird hats, good music, and no apparent point. All of which earn it 4 guitars in our book. I getting my haircut once and the stylist said that she was convinced Ian Astbury of the Cult was actually Jim Morrison of the Doors reincarnated.  I gave her an extra large tip so she could visit a therapist. Ironically, years later Astbury toured with the remaining members of the Doors.

One of the funniest things about the Cult in this video is if you turn off the sound and look at each member individually, you would think they were all playing a completely different genre of music. This might have been the first clue that the next three Cult albums would sound very different from each other.

WATN? The Cult are recording and plan a new release for Summer 2009.

Trivia: Ian Astbury’s “Gathering of Tribes” was the inspiration for Lollapalooza a year later. One former bass player went by the name Haggis.

INXS: Kiss the Dirt

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

On November 22, 1997, Michael Hutchence was found dead in a hotel room in a Sydney hotel room. Today we observe a moment of “reviewer silence” in honor of the former lead singer of INXS.  No ratings today. Just a good video.

Scritti Politti: A Perfect Way

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

What the Bleep is this? That’s what longtime Scritti Politti fans had to be thinking when they saw this video. The band released Cupid & Psyche 85 in 1985 (of course) and it was a huge departure from their previous sound. Originally a post punk rock band with heavy Marxist overtones, this album was pure 80’s pop. I can only compare it to The Clash releasing something that sounds like Toto. Anyway, American pop fans took to it and Perfect Way was their first and only U.S. top 20 hit.

WATN? They toured most recently in 2006 with only one original member.

Michael Bolton: Everybody’s Crazy

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Yes, that Michael Bolton. Believe it or not, the Adult Contemperary punchline of the 90’s was actually a headbanger in his early days. His first band even opened for Ozzy Ozborne! Try to wrap your brain around that little nugget.

Trivia: The song was featured in the movie Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield.  Guitarist Bruce Kulic went on to play in KISS for 12 years.

WATN? Playing some lousy lounge act in Vegas I suppose. I really didn’t have the stomach to find out.
